About the Water Rat Public House

Welcome to The Water Rat.

As landlord it is my pleasure to introduce you to the unusual appeal of The Water Rat here in the delightful city of Ripon.

The Water Rat’s delights include the Wind In The Willows themeThe Water Rat is in an unusual riverside location and the conservatory which overlooks the weir with views to Ripon cathedral is a popular venue for dining at either lunchtime or during the evening where we present a typically English choice of the highest possible quality and using fresh local produce wherever possible. As you may imagine the conservatory is also a popular venue for functions such as birthday celebrations and christenings and of course we are happy to discuss menu choices with you. Apart from our unusual location The Water Rat is popular with devotees of liquid refreshment in particular connoisseurs of real ales who find a choice of three usually available.

The Water Rat’s delights include the Wind In The Willows theme throughout and of course perfect given our riverside location. This children’s book, a constant delight to adults as well, was really a collection of bedtime stories which Kenneth Grahame sent from his holiday retreat in Cornwall to his son at home. Subsequently Wind In The Willows has to date gone in to over one hundred editions and is an ever popular subject for film and television featuring an array of fascinating river bank characters including “Ratty”, all seemingly ruled over by the immodest Mr. Toad:-

Sung with “unction” Toad’s Last Little Song goes:-
Shout—Hoo-ray!
And let each one of the crowd try and shout it very loud,
In honour of an animal of whom you are justly proud,
For it’s Toad’s –great—day!
